Three Wheeled Buggies
If you're seeking a buggy to jog with or just a compact stroller for the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes it easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.
For a smooth ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres and look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are prone, however, to punctures. Be prepared with an repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
Recent figures have been released revealing that the three-wheeled buggie which was a symbol of the decade of more money than sense - is in steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers which can handle a wider range of terrain, while still looking stylish and easy to push.
The basic idea is that the bigger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front enable you to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found that it was able to handle cobbles, grass rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said "it feels sturdy to push and is very stable when you're on rough terrain. Its tyres, which are inflated and require to be pumped up regularly they have suspension built-in. This was very comfortable for my children.
The shape and size of the seat is another aspect to consider. The seat should be big enough for your child to be at ease and to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of reclining completely, while others will only allow the parent to be facing one.
An excellent option for taking on off-road or muddy walks is the Roma Atlas. It can be used as a single from birth, and then expands to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers up to age 4 and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. Storage options are also great with a large storage basket and zip pockets on the hood and an extra pouch at the rear of seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels mean your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies that are off-road. They also allow you to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have wheels that swivel at the front to assist you in navigating tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is also useful if you bump against the kerb or a tree. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.
A lot of 3 wheel pushchairs have air filled tyres which means they can handle a variety of terrains and are far more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They are also lighter. They are more prone to punctures, and you'll require an repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3-wheelers. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to effortlessly climb and descend kerbs. 3 wheel stroller have a suspension system which according to her "smoothes out bumps extremely effectively".
The downside of having bigger wheels is that they make buggies quite large and make it difficult to get through narrow spaces. This is a problem if you use it for jogging, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow while out and about. Most models come with small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.
Easy to manoeuvre
A three-wheeled buggy is easier to maneuver with children. They are designed so that the front wheels can turn on a dime, and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she said: "The Terrain is a delight to navigate on rough terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was particularly useful." I was also amazed by how well it handled kerbs when using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely stable when going downhill or on uneven ground."
The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel buggy might make it difficult to squeeze into tight spaces. This is something you should keep in mind when your home is a city. If this is a problem, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better option for you.
